On Wednesday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. a Mines Alert was issued to make campus aware of police activity in Mines Park. The alert was issued after an individual evaded campus officers who were questioning him. According to Mines Public Safety, officers on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle (no license plate) in the survey field parking lot. Shortly after, officers made contact with a male who was crouched down by a Mines FM transit van. The unknown male claimed to be changing a tire. When officers asked for ID, the male fast-walked to his truck, jumped in and took off in a reckless manner. After the suspect ran the red light at 6th and Heritage, officers called off the pursuit. A perimeter was established in Mines Park in the event there were other vehicles involved in this suspected criminal activity. A subsequent investigation revealed that the male was removing the catalytic converter from the FM transit van. The suspect vehicle was a white Ford F-350 dually that had no license plates. The suspect was a white male, +/- 35 years old, tattoos on neck and both arms, wearing a shirt with arms cut off, gray Covid mask, maybe blond hair, carrying a large fixed-blade hunting knife in a brown leather sheath on his right side. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
