It’s Pride Month!!!
Department / Organization: LGBTQ+ MCA
Do you know why June is Pride Month?
On June 28, 1969 the patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, found themselves victims of another police raid only days after the last. Police raids were regular occurrences; they sought to arrest cross-dressing patrons, since it was illegal to dress as someone of the opposite sex, and to arrest employees for serving liquor without a license.
It was an emotional time for LGBTQ+ people with continuous harassment for their lifestyle and only finding refuge in rundown clubs. And on this night when those walls failed to give a safe space and as police wrestled detainees into police cars, the crowd of onlookers and patrons that were not arrested final had enough and erupted in protest. They threw things at the police officers and went as far as to set fire to the club. While violence is not the answer, it created a moment in history that would change the course for LGBTQ+ people. This was not the first-time people stood up for gay rights, but this was the pivotal moment in the Gay Rights Movement.
One year after the Stonewall Riots, community members gathered on the site to remember the brave actions of those patrons and to celebrate with the first gay pride parade where marchers made their way to Central Park chanting “Say it loud, gay is proud!” 53 years later, pride parades still happen across the country and world. Happy Pride month!!
