It’s Pride Month!!! There’s a flag for that!
Department / Organization: LGBTQ+ MCA
There are 50+ pride flags, and the one we think of today isn’t the original.
When you think of a pride flag, likely you see bright colors and something involving a rainbow. But that doesn’t mean we all saw the same flag. With 50+ pride flags, how could we?!
So how did they all start? In 1978, Gilbert Baker created the first known gay pride flag containing 8 colors each with its own meaning. Pink and Turquoise joined the rainbow, but in time the flag evolved, losing those colors and becoming the 6-color flag that has been associated with pride for many years. It is said that Harvey Milk, openly gay elected official (and this is in 1978 mind you), encouraged Baker to make a symbol to represent and honor the gay community.
Recently, you may have seen an addition to the flag with brown and black stripes. In 2017, the Philadelphia Pride Flag was created to include people of color. Just a year later, the Pride Progress Flag was unveiled adding the transgender flag colors. This flag has arrow shaped lines for people of color and trans people along with the traditional horizontal rainbow.
