Preferred First Name Project Update
Department / Organization: Title IX & Equity
Updates and reminders regarding the Preferred First Name Project.
Why Are Preferred Names Important? Calling a person by their preferred name shows respect. Using preferred names contributes to the University's goal of providing an empowering, safe and nondiscriminatory educational and work environment. Someone’s name is an extremely important part of a person's identity. We encourage everyone to utilize a person’s preferred name and pronouns whenever addressing or referring to them.
Beginning in Fall 2022:
Self Service Banner will display names as LAST NAME, PREFERRED FIRST NAME (LEGAL FIRST NAME). If no preferred first name has been provided by an individual, Self Service Banner will default to display only last name and legal first name.
Canvas will utilize preferred first names. If no preferred first name has been provided by an individual, Canvas will default to legal first name. This will result in class rosters utilizing preferred names without revealing legal first names to other system users such as classmates and instructors. Instructors will still be able to assign grades by identifying students by last name and CWID.
For more information about the Preferred First Name Project, please visit the Preferred First Name page (https://www.mines.edu/institutional-equity-title-ix/preferred-first-name/) and read our Preferred First Name Procedures (https://www.mines.edu/policy-library/preferred-first-name-procedures/).
