Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week
Department / Organization: LGBT MCA This week is used to promote information and awareness about aromatic spectrum identities and the issues they face.
What is Aromanticism? The term aromantic refers to people who do not feel any or little romantic attraction towards others. Essentially, people do not experience many romantic feelings for other people. Some individuals who fall on the aromantic spectrum of identities describe themselves as having experienced romantic love or romantic attraction at some point. Such aromantics may adopt labels for more specific identities on the aromantic spectrum, such as "grayromantic" (romantic attraction rarely experienced or only weakly experienced) or "demiromantic" (only experiencing romantic attraction after a strong emotional bond has been formed with the target). As the experience of romantic attraction is subjective, some aromantic people may find it difficult to determine whether they experience romantic attraction. Why Is Aromantic Awareness Important? We live in a society in which romance is not only a given but for many people a priority. We are constantly bombarded with romantic films, TV shows, books, and pop songs about falling in love. Many Aromantic people might feel forced into relationships just to meet a social convention. And many people still refuse to accept the existence of Aromantic people. With increased visibility and awareness of Aromanticism, those growing up and trying to work out who they are and why they’re different can see people like them, and a vocabulary they can use to describe themselves.
