ALL YOU NEED IS SNOW: FULFILL YOUR 400-HASS REQUIREMENT NOW
Department / Organization: HASS
Interested in photography, literature, the Mediterranean, Middle East and/or Trans-Caucasus? Enroll in HASS 418 NOW!
The course is "Narrating the Nation" (HASS 418), and it promises to be a pleasurable, very straightforward way for you to complete the 400-level requirement. All students are warmly invited.
The course meets Monday and Wednesday at 5:30; most classes will end by 8pm. Because of personal travel and official holidays, we will meet just nine times: 5/15; 5/20; 5/22; 5/29; 6/3; 6/5; 6/10; 6/12; 6/17. The course will impinge very lightly on your broader work, recreation and travel plans. Two absences will be fully excused.
The regional focus of our reading and discussion will be Turkey—first Istanbul, and then the Eastern Anatolian region neighboring Armenia, Iran, Syria and the ex-Soviet Union. (We will be discussing these nations and territories as well). The primary author will be Nobel laureate Oran Pamuk. We will read segments of his beautifully illustrated memoir "Istanbul," as well as his most important novel: "Snow?." [Those of you who like photography will be thrilled by Istanbul?!]. So just two assigned texts. I think you'll like both of them very much.
There are only two writing assignments for the class: a 3 page "midterm" essay (double-spaced), and a final essay of 5-7 pages (double-spaced).
