Creating and Understanding Good Samaritan Policies for Abandoned Mines
Hundreds of thousands of abandoned mines are polluting land and waterways across the United States. Due to prohibitive costs and restrictive federal environmental laws, it is not clear how these mines can be remediated or how pollution can be addressed. As part of a Colorado Policy Fellowship, Jordan Calderon researched and developed a state- level bill to help remediate abandoned mines in Colorado through voluntary cleanup efforts (Good Samaritans). His presentation will provide background on the issue of abandoned mines, how mining policy can be developed, and what potential avenues exist for cleaning up abandoned mines through volunteer efforts (Good Samaritans).
