Orion is NASA’s next generation spacecraft, uniquely designed to carry humans to explore deep space. No other spacecraft in development has the technology needed for the extremes of deep space, such as life support, navigation, communication, radiation shielding, and safety systems to protect astronauts and return them safely back home. Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor, designing and building the Orion spacecraft as part of NASA’s Artemis program, to develop a sustainable presence on the lunar surface of the moon and prepare humans to explore Mars. Come learn about the technologies, testing, and mission plans for the Orion spacecraft, including Artemis III, which will carry the first woman and the next man to the surface of the moon later this decade.
Heather McKay is the Engineering Development Senior Manager on the Orion program at Lockheed Martin. Her team is responsible for all design upgrades, and mission kits, on the Orion spacecraft. Heather started her career at Lockheed Martin as a propulsion engineer and has spent close to two decades working on human spaceflight programs in various engineering and leadership roles.
