Mines’ Engineering Learning Classroom Observation Tool: How are we doing, and how do we know? Presented by Timeri Tolnay, Faculty Developer, Trefny Innovative Instruction Center March 21 Pedagogy Seminar at noon in CT 102
Tools for collecting data about classroom teaching and learning can provide powerful avenues for motivating teaching improvement at the classroom level. As Mines faculty move away from covering content to becoming designers of learning opportunities, the Trefny Center has developed a new classroom observation tool to measure levels of active learning, based on the research of Chi (2009), Prince (2004), Resnick & Hall (2000) and others. We are calling this the ENGINEERING LEARNING Classroom Observation Tool (ELCOT).
At this month’s Pedagogy Seminar we will present the Trefny Center’s ELCOT tool. We will describe our process and rationale for evolving Weiman’s COPUS protocol using an adaptation of Chi’s ICAP categories and research on productive academic talk. We will provide insights and rationale for the use of an online tool from UC Davis so that classroom observations are conducted digitally, and the data more easily aggregated and shared. We'll share an overview of the evolution of ELCOT, the results from two rounds of classroom observations at Mines, and how you can use this data to fine tune your own instruction.
