Department / Organization: LGBT+ MCA
LGBTQ+ people are incredibly likely to have some degree of parental rejection - learn why found families are so important
Chosen families are defined as highly committed and friendship-based kin-like relationships. These are people we have in our lives that we are not directly related or born into, but instead families we find and honor.
So - Why are “Chosen” or “Found” families so important to the LGBTQ+ community? It is estimated that up to 70% of LGBTQ+ youth experience some degree of parental or familial rejection – this can include disownment, verbal rejection, religious persecution, being kicked out of their homes, abandoned, or abused by their family members. 46% of reported LGBTQ+ young adults are estranged from at least one family member.
With such a large and prevalent issue of rejection and abuse towards the LGBTQ+ community, many community members seek close bonds from people outside of their family unit. Instead forming found or chosen families, where they are able to surround themselves in supporting and loving people who accept them regardless of sexuality or gender expression.
If you have someone in your life that is part of the LGBTQ+ community and they tell you they consider you family - understand, celebrate and embrace that person as part of your own chosen family!
