Research Methods & Communications in STEM

New 1-credit courses will be offered in fall for undergraduate students who are currently working with a research mentor
Research Methods in STEM HNRS 398A – B CRN:12286 Fall 2025 1 credit Tues 9-9:50 AM
This course supports students who already have a faculty research mentor as they navigate the undergraduate research process. Inclusive of multiple disciplines, this course covers research methods across STEM fields. In addition to being introduced to the research lifecycle, students will learn how to search for appropriate journal articles necessary for preparing a literature review, understand the fundamentals of research design, execute research projects, and utilize data analysis tools to interpret data.
Research Communications in STEM CRN: 82253 HNRS 398B - A CRN:82253 Fall 2025 1 credit Thurs 2-2:50 PM
This course empowers advanced undergraduate researchers actively engaged in research projects on campus to integrate best practices in the communication of scholarly STEM research visually, orally, and in writing. Students will learn how to develop an audience-centered approach in the crafting and delivery of research communication and will curate a toolkit for planning a significant research project. By conclusion of the course, students will be confident contributors to the research community at Mines having designed and practiced the written, spoken, and visual dimensions of communication.
Please note that these classes count as free electives. Students can consult with their department to determine if it can be approved as a technical elective.
