May 15 Lunch Bunch: the Energy & Materials Research Facility

Department / Organization: Mines Foundation

Big changes are taking shape at the corner of 18th and Illinois!

We finish out this semester's Lunch Bunch series with an inside look at the Energy & Materials Research Facility — a bold new partnership between Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey that’s set to redefine collaborative science and innovation on campus. Scheduled to open in January 2027, this facility will bring together cutting-edge research in energy systems, sustainable materials and earth sciences under one roof.

Terri Hogue, Dean of Earth and Society Programs and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Kirsten Volpi, Executive Vice President, COO, CFO and Treasurer, will share the vision behind the facility, updates on construction progress, and what to expect from the programs and partnerships it will support.

From research impact to real-world collaboration, this new space represents a major step forward in Mines’ commitment to addressing global challenges in energy and sustainability.
