October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)
Department / Organization: SHAPE Office
Throughout this week, we'll be sharing information and resources.
October has been designated by the US Congress as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month since 1989 with the goal of raising awareness of this important issue affecting millions of people.
1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men aged 18 or older have been the victim of physical violence by an intimate partner (Black et al., 2011). 54% of all transgender & non-binary people have been the victim of intimate partner or domestic violence at some point in their lives (US Transgender Survey, 2015).
Throughout this week, we'll be sharing information and resources to equip our community to understand the dynamics of domestic violence, know the resources available to support, and skills to prevent.
One small way to help is to join in Mines Purple Thursday on October 23rd by wearing purple as visible support for survivors of domestic violence. No purple in your wardrobe? We'll be hosting a table on the plaza on 10/23 from 10:30-1:30 where you can pick up a purple ribbon. Show up in purple and you'll be entered into a raffle for some Gold Mine cupcakes on us.
