NSAM: The Impact of Stalking & Supports Available at Mines
Department / Organization: SHAPE Office
Stalking can derail college life and come with real financial and emotional costs.
Stalking can seriously disrupt a student’s academic life. Victim-survivors often struggle with concentration, attendance, and grades, and in some cases, the stress and fear may even lead them to drop classes or temporarily leave school.
Beyond academics, stalking can force students to change their living situations, such as moving out of dorms or switching apartments, which adds additional stress and logistical challenges. There are also financial consequences, including lost wages from work or internships, and out-of-pocket expenses for legal fees, security measures, or relocation costs. Altogether, the impacts of stalking reach far beyond fear—they impact a student’s education, safety, and financial stability.
Mines offers a variety of supportive measures and resources for students affected by stalking. These include confidential counseling to help cope with the emotional impact, housing adjustments or emergency relocation options to ensure safety, and no-contact directives to limit interactions with the stalker. Academic accommodations, such as classroom or testing support, can help victim-survivors maintain their studies while managing stress. Mines connects students with both on-campus and community-based resources, including legal guidance, advocacy support, and safety planning tools. By providing these comprehensive supports, our community aims to help students feel safe, supported, and empowered to continue their education without fear.
