Mining Seminar Series: George Afriyie on April 8

Department / Organization: Mining Engineering

Topic: The Mining Industry & Opportunities for Graduating Students - An Engineer’s Perspective

Abstract: The demand for specialized engineering talent in the mining industry is projected to rise significantly over the next decade, driven by substantial increases in global mineral and resource needs. As this demand increases, the sector is already experiencing a pronounced shortage of engineers across multiple disciplines, including civil, geotechnical, mining, environmental, electrical, mechanical, and processing engineering. The presentation will outline the key challenges contributing to the engineering shortage, examine the underlying factors driving increased demand, and provide students with practical strategies and tools to position themselves for success. By understanding industry trends and aligning their skills with emerging opportunities, students can build fulfilling and impactful careers in the rapidly evolving mining sector.
