NUCLEAR Fun Fact of the Week

Department / Organization: American Nuclear Society

Can a modern nuclear power plant explode like a nuclear bomb? (Click blue link for answer!!)

ANSWER: No!!! Commercial nuclear reactors use fuel that is only lightly enriched (about 3–5% U-235), far below the level needed for a bomb. The fuel and reactor design prevent a rapid, explosive chain reaction. (Source linked below)

OVERVIEW: If you enjoyed this fact and want to explore nuclear from many different perspectives, including energy, policy, and engineering, consider joining the AMERICAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY. We host casual meetings with FREE FOOD, opportunities to talk directly with INDUSTRY PROFFESIONALS, and OPEN CONVERSATIONS about how nuclear fits into the future of energy.

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION: Check in on Wednesdays nuclear fun fact for our speaker!

TIME/LOCATION: Typically, there are two back to back events held in Hill Hall. Nuclear seminars are every Wednesday from 4–5 pm in Room 202, followed by ANS meetings from 5–6 pm in Room 209. Come to either or stay for both.
