NUCLEAR Fun Fact of the Week
Department / Organization: American Nuclear Society How did the U.S. go from dominating nuclear fuel production to depending on other countries to keep its reactors running?
ANSWER: After leading the world in uranium enrichment in the 1980s, the U.S. gradually lost its edge as domestic facilities shut down and cheaper, state-supported competitors, especially abroad, expanded. Today, that shift means the U.S. still relies on foreign enrichment services to power its own nuclear fleet, exposing a major vulnerability in an otherwise domestic energy source.
