New Wire EDM Capability in the Research Machine Shop

Department / Organization: SIF

The Research Machine Shop now has a HB600UL Wire-Cut EDM, bringing advanced in-house precision machining for complex parts.

Key capabilities:
- 4-axis cutting (X, Y, U, V) for complex, tapered, and contoured parts
- Work envelope, up to 600mm X 400mm X 400mm
- Precision cutting utilizing a .2mm wire to produce dimensional accuracy up to +/- .025mm

This makes the machine especially well-suited for hard materials and tight tolerances, intricate geometries and fine features, and custom research components and tooling that conventional machining can't reliably produce.

And because it's available on campus at internal rates, researchers can access this level of precision without the lead times or markups of an outside shop.
