Building a Culture of Compassion in STEM Education
The Compassionate STEM program is a dedicated community of faculty committed to integrating compassion into undergraduate STEM curricula through engaged pedagogical approaches.
We are recruiting participants from Virginia Tech & the Colorado School of Mines to join the fall 2026 cohort
--Who?
Anyone teaching undergraduates in the STEM fields at Virginia Tech or Colorado School of Mines.
--What are the benefits?
-Engage with like-minded instructors who believe that all students deserve to feel welcome and belong in STEM classrooms
-Learn, apply, and reflect upon practical strategies for building and supporting a compassionate classroom environment
-Be a part of a community of faculty committed to a student-centered and holistic pedagogy of compassion
--What is expected?
-Attend four 2-hour workshops and four 1-hour small group discussions during the fall semester
-Write reflections on your teaching in an online program workbook during the spring semester
-Join when able any in-person gatherings to sustain community across the Compassionate STEM cohorts
-As an incentive for your full participation, you will receive a $1000 stipend (either through a gift card or a professional development fund transfer) upon completion
