This course offers a comprehensive examination of the relationship between mining and sustainability, with a special emphasis on the community dimensions of sustainability. Through a social science lens, students will explore the environmental, social, economic, and ethical dimensions of mining practices and their intersection with local communities, governments, and other stakeholders. Students will gain a deep understanding of how the concept of sustainability in mining is conceptualized, implemented, and critiqued and develop critical thinking skills to address contemporary issues and dilemmas facing the mining industry. Although this is a mining focused class, the information and skills learned will be transferrable to many different kinds of engineering projects.
